You Eat What You See

Ever notice that when you're hungry, you usually grab the first thing you see?

That's not because you lack willpower—it's because your environment is making the decision for you. The good news? You can use that to your advantage.

Make healthy foods impossible to miss.

When nutritious foods are the first thing you see, you're much more likely to eat them.

Here are a few simple ways to make that happen:

🍋 Keep healthy foods visible.

Instead of hiding fruit in the crisper drawer, place it where you'll see it every day.

  • Fill a bowl with lemons, apples, oranges, or bananas and leave it on the kitchen counter.

  • Wash grapes or berries as soon as you get home from the grocery store so they're ready to grab.

  • Keep cut fruit and veggies in clear containers at eye level in your refrigerator.

🥜 Upgrade your snack station.

Your desk, car, or pantry shouldn't make junk food the easiest option. When hunger hits, convenience usually wins.

Instead, keep foods like:

Roasted chickpeas or edamame

Mixed nuts or trail mix

Beef jerky

👀 Reorganize your pantry.

You don't have to throw away your favorite treats—you just don't need to see them every time you open the cabinet. Here's the strategy:

  1. Move cookies, candy, and chips to higher shelves, opaque containers, or the back of the pantry.

  2. Then place healthier options like popcorn, nuts, dried fruit, or high-protein snacks at eye level.

Food isn't off-limits.

This isn't about "good" foods versus "bad" foods.

It's about designing your environment so the healthiest choice is also the easiest choice.

Willpower comes and goes. Your environment is working 24 hours a day.

This week's challenge:

  1. At the grocery store, buy 5-6 pieces of fruit (lemons, apples, oranges, or bananas)

  2. Place them in a bowl on your kitchen counter.

  3. Then, choose one other place—your work desk, pantry, refrigerator, or car—and make the healthiest option the first thing you see.

Remember: You eat what you see. So make sure what you see is helping you reach your goals.
