You could be drinking 80-180 ounces of water per day...but electrolytes are how the body actually absorbs both water and nutrients from food.
Electrolytes are essentially minerals that wear many hats throughout the body VITAL to our survival. Water depends on electrolytes for absorption so it's not shooting through you like a tidal wave from the mouth to the toilet!
Some roles they have are:
- Fatty acid converters needs magnesium and zinc. This is especially important for digesting - and utilizing* fats appropriately. If fats are not digested appropriately, maldigestion can occur in the upper G.I. tract, which leaves that leaves partially undigested food sitting to ferment...leading to extremely smelling gas, bloating, and overall digestive discomfort.
- The muscles need magnesium and calcium to contract and relax. Magnesium relaxes muscle, while calcium contracts muscle. If you're looking to increase muscle tone and overall fitness, electrolytes will be key.
- The sodium-potassium-pump needs sodium and potassium to transfer things (like cell foods, nutrients, hormones) in and out of the cell.
- The pancreas needs calcium to produce insulin to regulate our blood sugar. This is especially important for Blood Sugar Regulation symptoms (i.e.: waking in the middle of the night, irritable if not fed, etc.).
I always recommend consuming 1 scoop of electrolytes each morning w water. Some brands I recommend are:
